Kevyn Aucoin | Making Faces | Face Forward

I'm sure a lot of you will have heard of Kevyn Aucoin, if not of the make-up artist himself, at least of the brand. I haven't actually tried any Kevyn Aucoin makeup yet - still dreaming about his sculpting powder - but I'd heard such great things about his books, I bought them off Amazon last week as a little post-exams treat. Making Faces was his first book and the one I'd heard most about, but I couldn't resist snapping up Face Forward too. 

Both books are divided up into different sections with Making Faces consisting of three parts: Making the Face, A Gathering and Great Looks. 

Making the Face details the different steps in makeup from the basics like skincare and foundation to the more complex like contouring as well as showing very simple makeup looks, while A Gathering shows transformations of everyday people with before and after pictures and the easy to follow steps for the look. And then, Great Looks, probably my favourite section of the book, shows iconic makeup looks from throughout history, recreated on a number of Kevyn's clients and friends, like Cher, Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner and more. 

Face Forward includes even more transformations and goes into further depth on the basics of makeup, not leaving out the pages of lips and brows while also not being repetitive. I'd say Making Faces is more for the makeup beginner as it focuses more on the basics whereas Face Forward is more for someone wanting inspiration and steps to create specific looks, but I'd definitely recommend both books for anyone interested in makeup or wanting to expand their makeup book collection. 

You can easily see from the books how amazing Kevyn was at makeup and I desperately want to try out his makeup line.
